Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
