RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
