TikTok Provides Users Control to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-created media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company disclosed that it currently hosts more than 1 bn AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a global launch. This development coincides with a rise in AI-generated material, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost 10% of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we aim to give people the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. In total, more than 100 mn media items are added to the service every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they view by using the topic control option in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be modified under the filter encompass current affairs, clothing, beauty, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies require users to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will now add an “AI-made” watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This step is designed to stop users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also introducing a $2m awareness program for specialists and organizations to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit non-profit groups dedicated to teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, during discussion over plans to make redundant a large number of review team members in Britain. The company is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive clarified that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by people. The platform reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is really helping us operate efficiently.”
